Cairo, (IINA) - A three-day meeting to discuss ways to activate Arab boycott of Israeli goods is underway in Cairo. The  89th meeting of
communication officers at the regional offices for boycotting Israel started their deliberations at the Arab League headquarters here, Middle East Monitor (MEM) news agency reported citing alamatonline.net.
The recommendations of the meeting will be presented at the meeting of Arab foreign ministers in September, which is expected to be attended by all Arab countries except those having relations with Israel.
Mohammad Sabeeh, assistant secretary general of the Department for Palestine and Occupied Arab territories at the Arab League, said in a statement that the officials are discussing the prospect of imposing sanctions on those Arab-owned companies that violate the Israeli product boycott rules.
A number of American companies with branches in Israel will also be considered for boycott, he said adding that the meeting will discuss the modification of the general boycott principles in order to reactivate them.
According to Sabeeh, "the boycott of Israel is one of the mechanisms adopted to express the Arab rejection of Israeli practices and violations in the occupied Arab lands", he also pointed out that EU and US boycott campaigns have cost the Israeli economy more than $20 billion.
"A boycott," explained Sabeeh, "is an internationally-recognized economic weapon." It was used previously against the Apartheid regime in South Africa, he noted.
