Beirut (IINA) – The Lebanese people celebrated the festival of Eid al-Fitr on Friday amid calls from Lebanon's Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Daryan, for rejection of extremism in religion and politics, and to giving priority to the sense of citizenship.
A large number of Lebanese attended the Eid prayers in mosques of different cities and villages throughout the country.
Prime Minister Tammam Salam performed the Eid prayers in Mohammed Al-Amin Mosque, in the capital Beirut, in the presence of a number of MPs, political and security leaders, as well as representatives of diplomatic missions accredited to Lebanon.
In the Eid sermon, Sheikh Daryan stressed the need to reject religious and political extremism, calling for moderation, dialogue and giving priority to the sense of citizenship among the Lebanese people.
The mufti also emphasized the need for discipline within the principles of religion and Arabism in the face of division and the dangers facing the nation, especially the religious extremism, the spread of wars, and the international policies that target the region.
It is to be noted that the Lebanese army earlier announced that it would implement extraordinary security measures around places of worship, key roads and tourist facilities on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr. The measures also involved deployment of troops, security patrols, and setting up checkpoints to maintain security and ensure the safety of all citizens.
