Dublin (IINA) – Irish Muslims marched on Sunday in “Not In Our Name” protest against the so-called Islamic State (IS), rejecting the murder of three Irish citizens in Sousse, Tunisia, last month.
"There is a small minority of Irish Muslims who identify with IS, but we need to prevent them from spreading their lies," Dr Sheikh Umar Al-Qadri, the imam of the Al-Mustafa mosque in Blanchardstown who helped organize the protest, told the Herald on Monday, according to On Islam website.
"There are silent supporters of extremism. We must isolate all those who do not condemn terrorism and who choose to remain silent. I believe that anyone who remains silent on these terrorist activities is somehow supporting terrorism," he added.
The rally in Dublin's city center comes one month after the attack on a beach in the Tunisian resort town of Sousse, in which 38 tourists, including three Irish people, were killed by an IS militant.
Organized under the banner of the Muslim Peace and Integration Council, the “Not In My Name” march aims to show that the “murderous campaign” by IS terrorist group is “absolutely against the teachings of Islam.”
The Council had distributed invitations to take part in the demonstration across the country.
Muslims make up 1.1 percent (50,000) of the 4.5 million people in Ireland, whilst two decades ago they numbered 4,000.
