Bagdad (IINA) – Iraqi security forces have recaptured Anbar Universityk, located west of Ramadi city in Iraq’s western Anbar province, from Daesh militant group, a government official told Anadolu Agency on Sunday.
“Security forces, backed by U.S. and Iraqi air support, have liberated Anbar University from Daesh, leaving 29 Daesh militants dead and 15 injured,” said Eid Ayyash, a spokesman for Anbar’s provincial council.
Ayyash did not, however, mention any casualties from among the ranks of Iraqi security forces, who, he said, were currently “purging” the university campus of explosive devices planted by the militant group.
In mid-July, Iraq’s Defense Ministry announced the launch of fresh military operations aimed at flushing Daesh militants from Anbar and its provincial capital Ramadi.
Although Daesh recently lost several parts of Iraq’s Diyala, Nineveh and Saladin provinces, it remains in control of most of Anbar, including Ramadi.
