Jakarta (IINA) – The United States will channel funds to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to help Indonesia deal with the Rohingya refugee crisis, ANTARA News reported.
“The Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry has asked us to encourage other countries to participate (in helping the Rohingya refugees)," said Anne C. Richard, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration, after meeting Vice President Jusuf Kalla here on Wednesday.
Richard said helping the refugees should be given priority now and overcoming other problems such as human smuggling will be dealt with later.
The U.S. government expects to continue consultations with Southeast Asian governments in identifying the best possible methods to contribute humanitarian assistance to immigrants in the region.
At a special meeting in Bangkok on May 29, the United States unveiled a plan to extend $3 million in aid to the IOM to support efforts overcoming the Rohingya crisis.
