Bangkok (IINA) – U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter hailed Thailand's initiative to host a regional meeting to address the issue of Rohingya refugees, Thai News Agency (TNA) reported.
Carter told Thai Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan at Asia Security Summit – or IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore that the meeting would lead to better cooperation among regional countries to deal with the Rohingyas.
He also commended Thailand's role in providing humanitarian assistance to Nepal in the wake of the April earthquakes, and for supporting the Cobra Gold joint military exercise.
Defense ministers, permanent secretaries of ministries and military chiefs from some 30 Asia-Pacific countries attended the Shangri-La Dialogue from May 29-31.
