Millions of Ethiopians go to polls in general elections

Addis Ababa (IINA) – Millions of Ethiopians cast their vote on Sunday in the country's general elections, the first since the death of long-serving Prime Minister Meles Zenawi in 2012, news agencies reported.
Preliminary results are expected to come out within five days and final results will be released in a month’s time.
According to polls, the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front is likely to achieve a resounding victory. The political party has ruled since 1991 after taking power in a coup against the government of Mengistu Haile Mariam. The coup was led by Zenawi and his successor and current Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, who is expected to stay in office.
Over 36.8 million people have registered to choose between 5,819 candidates from 47 political parties competing for a seat in parliament and regional councils, According to authorities.  
It is noteworthy that Ethiopia is Africa's second-most populous country and currently ranks among the continent's top performing economies.
