Djibouti (IINA) – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Djibouti on Wednesday for talks with the government and to visit a key U.S. military base from where pilots fly missions over Yemen and Somalia, Reuters reported.
The tiny Horn of Africa nation overlooking the Gulf of Aden has become an important center for Washington's interventions in Africa and against al-Qaeda safe havens in Yemen. Off its shores is a vital sea lane for ships heading to the Gulf.
The United States has beefed up its small consular operations in Djibouti to help process Yemeni-American families fleeing the conflict in Yemen.
A senior State Department official said Kerry will thank President Ismail Omer Guelleh for being a dependable ally in the fight against terrorism and for the role he played in evacuations from Yemen.
Kerry will head to Riyadh later on Wednesday to discuss the Saudi bombing campaign against the Houthis, as well as an upcoming summit of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) States in Washington.
