Houthis in Yemen

New York (IINA) – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has considered Houthi group’s seizure of power in Yemen as a flagrant violation of UN resolutions and of the parties’ commitments towards the UN-sponsored political process.

The UN chief told reporters here on Thursday before departing to Panama to attend the Two Americas Summit that since the first advance of Houthis, the situation deteriorated dramatically, leading to an Arab military coalition intervention, under the leadership of Saudi Arabia, in response to a request from Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi.

Ban confirmed that the UN-mediated negotiations was a chance to restore the political transition process to its path and preservation of Yemen's safety and territorial integrity. He said that his special envoy Jamal Benomar has, over two months, managed to facilitate comprehensive negotiations for all parties without exception, noting that despite the differences that are yet to be addressed, a number of some key issues have been settled.

The Secretary General called on all parties to return to the political negotiations with goodwill. Meanwhile, he urged protection of civilians and enabling humanitarian agencies to assist them.
