Dr. Keiji Fukuda (WHO)

Riyadh (IINA) – Assistant Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Health Security Affairs Dr. Keiji Fukuda has praised the level of actions being taken by the Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health in fighting the Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

“I have noticed a significant improvement this year, in addition to what was done in the past at the level of addressing and dealing with the virus, especially in therapeutic, diagnostic and preventive services,” Dr. Fukuda said.

He pointed to the significant improvements he observed during his visit, including the establishment of an advanced center for monitoring and following-up the infected cases, with sub-centers in 20 regions across the Kingdom, as well as the level of preparations for the virus' diagnosis and analysis in laboratories, and the strict infection control procedures in hospitals.

Fukuda also pointed to the set of research and scientific studies being conducted to examine this virus and fill gaps in identifying its properties. He stressed the importance of continuing this concrete work done by Saudi Arabia, in order to integrate the efforts to tackle the Corona virus.

He said despite the fact that the bulk of the infection by the Corona virus is still occurring in Saudi Arabia and a number of other countries, the WHO has, so far, classified the virus as an emergency event that constitutes an international concern, and being eliminated with the help of many international organizations.

“We're here today [Saturday] at the head of a mission of many competent international experts from WHO headquarters in Geneva and the Regional Offices in Cairo and Riyadh, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), Paris, as well as experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Rome, and the French-based Institute Pasteur specializing in infectious diseases and vaccines,” Dr. Fukuda added.
