Monday 23 Feb 2015 - 13:39 Makkah mean time-4-5-1436 Gaza (Photo: PNN image) Gaza (IINA) – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) said Sunday that $100 million is urgently needed within the quarter of 2015 to repair homes damaged or destroyed during the last Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip.
The UNRWA expressed concerns that the affected families might not be able to live in decent residential areas if the amount was not provided.
According to the UN agency's initial assessments, 96,000 Palestine refugee homes were damaged or destroyed during last summer’s Israeli war against the Strip, and more than $720 million is required for the reconstruction process. The agency said it has received only $135 million out of that amount, leaving a shortfall of $585 million.
In a statement, the UNRWA said that $5.4 billion was pledged at the Cairo conference last October and virtually none of it has reached Gaza, calling the situation there as "distressing and unacceptable".
Due to lack of funds, the agency announced last month, the suspension of its cash assistance program for repairing and providing rental subsidies to Palestine refugee families in Gaza.
