New York City (IINA) – Medical researchers from Columbia University have developed a low-cost smartphone accessory that can detect HIV and syphilis from a finger prick of blood in just 15 minutes.

It the first smartphone accessory that replicates all the functions of a laboratory-based blood test, according to the researchers.

During the field testing in the Republic of Rwanda, the health care workers, who were given 30 minutes of training, used it to analyze blood samples from 96 patients. The vast majority of patients (97 percent) had a positive response to the device.

The findings were published in the journal Science Translational Medicine on February 4.
