Jordanian fighter jets launch new airstrikes against ISIS killing 55 of them

Amman, (IINA) – Jordan launched air strikes on Thursday against ISIS militants killing 55 of them a day after King Abdullah vowed to avenge the death of Jordanian pilot Moath al-Kassasbeh who was burned alive by ISIS group.

Jordanian fighter jets flew over the hometown of Moath and the capital Amman on Thursday after completing a mission against the group, state television said without giving the location of their sortie, Reuters reported.

Jordan's army did not disclose what country was targeted during the operation on Thursday, but Al Jazeera has learned that King Abdullah told Kassasbeh's father Safi al-Kassasbeh that the warplanes flying over their town have just returned from al-Raqqa, the ISIL stronghold in Syria.

"Planes from the Jordanian Royal Forces have just arrived from al-Raqqa now after bombarding and pounding them," al-Kassasbeh said after he was told by visiting Jordanian king.

From its side, Iraqi media said that the Jordanian airstrikes have killed 55 ISIS militants including a senior commander known as the “Prince of Nineveh”, news agencies reported.

Al Jazeera has also learned from sources in the Iraqi border police of Anbar province, in western Iraq, that Jordanian troops have moved closer towards the Iraqi border, near the Rowaished area opposite the Iraqi city of Trebil.

Jordan’s severe response to ISIS after it killed an air force pilot by burning him alive came just hours after King Abdullah vowed to avenge Moath al-Kassasbeh’s death.

Noteworthy that those airstrikes came just hours after Jordan executed two militant prisoners in response to the killing of Kassasbeh’s.
