Thursday 19 Feb 2015 - 11:00 Makkah mean time-30-4-1436 Google images Doha (IINA) – An estimated 600 million people will suffer from type 2 diabetes worldwide by 2035, said a recent report on the prevalence of the disease, calling it a “serious and urgent” challenge.
The report titled "Rising to the Challenge" was released at the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH), kicked off here on Tuesday. It stated that the cost of direct healthcare for diabetes and its complications was $ 612 billion, around 11 percent of total healthcare costs worldwide in 2014.
The report called on policymakers to address the urgent and universal diabetes challenge. It highlighted that around 10 percent of the world's adult population will suffer from the disease in 20 years, said a statement from WISH.
Experts said that diabetes currently lacks public or political priority it needs and proposes three clinical goals for policymakers, namely: improving disease management for sufferers to reduce complication rates; establishing effective surveillance to identify and support those at risk of type 2 diabetes; and delivering interventions to create an environment focused on prevention.
The report said that the health consequences of type 2 diabetes are more severe than often recognized and include increased susceptibility to blindness, lower limb amputations, kidney failure, heart attacks and stroke," the report said.
At present, type 2 diabetes affects about 350 million people around the world, with 80 percent of the diabetic population living in countries where only 20 percent of the global budget for healthcare is spent.
