Wednesday 03 Dec 2014 - 13:01 Makkah mean time-11-2-1436 New York (IINA) – The UN General Assembly approved an Arab-backed resolution, moved by Egypt, calling on Israel to abandon its nuclear weapons and subject its nuclear facilities to international monitoring.
The resolution, which was adopted in a 161-5 vote on Tuesday, noted that Israel is the only Middle Eastern country that is not party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
It called on Israel “to ratify the Treaty without further delay, not to develop, produce, test or otherwise acquire nuclear weapons, and to renounce possession of nuclear weapons”. It also called on Israel to place all its nuclear facilities under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) supervision.
The United States, Canada, Palau and Micronesia joined Israel in opposing the measure, while 18 countries abstained, BBC reported.
The resolution, titled “The risk of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East,” called for the creation of Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in the Middle East, and lamented that US-backed efforts to convene talks were abandoned in 2012.
Israel insists that any creation of a zone free of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East could only be achieved after establishing a peace agreement with the Palestinians.
The General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, however they carry moral weight because it is the only body where all 193 UN member states are represented.
