Doha (IINA) – The International Organization of Employers (IOE) praised workers' conditions in Qatar and the state's obligation to provide a safe working environment, healthcare and adequate housing units, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.
The IOE made the remarks during its delegation field visit to Qatar's Labor City organised by the Qatar Chamber, to check on the living conditions in the area.
The Labor City was opened in November last year to accommodate more than 100,000 workers, and is equipped with housing units, clinics, places of worship, stadiums, sanitary fittings, shopping centers and bus stops.
The IOE delegation checked the working sites at Al Wakrah Stadium, scheduled to be completed simultaneously with the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Officials of the International Labor Organisation (ILO) and IOE expressed their admiration for the Labor City, which was built according to international standards and represents adequate housing environment that includes all utilities, entertainment.
They said that what they saw made them believe that Qatar deserved to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup and that it was ready to host international tournaments and other sporting events.
Director General of Qatar Chamber Saleh Hamad Al Sharqi said that the praise of the officials from the ILO and IOE was "an international certificate" for Qatar's commitment to international standards of workers' rights and providing appropriate working environment. He pointed out that these praises refute allegations, circulated by some Western authorities on workers' situation in Qatar.
Al Sharqi affirmed Qatar Chamber's keenness to accompany officials of the two international organisations to the World Cup projects, such as Al Wakrah Stadium and housing units for workers, "to see the reality on the ground."
