Brussels (IINA) – Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said Wednesday that Brussels was returning to “normal life,” two weeks after the attacks by suicide bombers that killed 32 people and injured many others at the city’s airport and at a metro station.
In a joint press conference, Prime Minister Michel and Head of the Brussels Regional Government Rudi Vervoort said that operations at the recently reopened airport were increasing and that the city’s public transportation system would soon “be fully operational.”
“Regarding the subway, the aim is to make it fully operational at some point during next week,” Vervoort said.
“It is not a technical issue, the [Brussels public transit authority] has the ability to reopen the subway but we need to have enough security and soldiers to make the metro safe,” he added.
Prime Minister Michel said Belgium had been confronted with a “tragedy never seen before” but had responded quickly with measures to address the need for increased security. He added that the attacks were “unquestionably a failure for Belgium” but dismissed criticisms by some that his country was a “failed state”. However, he admitted more has to be done to prevent terrorism.
