Tunis (IINA) – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday welcomed democratic progress in Tunisia while reaffirming the United Nations' support to its citizens and government.
“[World Bank President] Kim and I are here to show our support to Tunisia, where progress towards stability and prosperity are advancing despite significant economic and security challenges,” Ban told reporters at a press conference in the capital Tunis.
During his meeting with President Beji Caid Essebsi, the UN chief congratulated the president for the democratic progress made in Tunisia; lauded his efforts to reduce social and economic inequalities; and assured him of the UN support for the government and people of Tunisia at a time when the country is in transition.
The Secretary General, who is due to attend a national conference on employment on Tuesday, expressed concern about unemployment among youth. He stressed the UN readiness to continue its collaboration with Tunisia to build on programs that create jobs and reduce inequalities.
At the press conference, Ban also expressed the global community's concern about the terrorist attacks that recently targeted Tunisia. He said the UN recognizes the impact of the situation in Libya on Tunisia, stressing that work is ongoing towards a political solution in that country.
