New York (IINA) – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday condemned the "shocking murder" of Amer al-Kaissy, an Iraqi national who served as liaison officer for the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) in Diyala, in the country's east, and called on "Iraqi authorities to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are held accountable.”
Al-Kaissy, a local UN staff member, was abducted from the eastern province of Diyala last April by unidentified persons, and his murder was verified on Monday, said a statement issued here on Tuesday by Ban's spokesman.
The UN chief also expressed his heartfelt condolences to al-Kaissy's family and friends, the statement said.
In a related context, UN Envoy for Iraq and head of UNAMI Jan Kubiš informed the Security Council of the news that al-Kaissy was found dead, and strongly urged the Iraqi authorities to conduct immediately a thorough and transparent investigation into his abduction and murder and hold the perpetrators accountable.
