 Hyderabad (IINA) – Prominent Indian Muslim leader and Islamic scholar Maulana Abdul Rahim Qureshi died on Thursday.
Qureshi, aged 82, had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad since several days and had his death following a cardiac arrest early hours of the day. Thousands of people attended Janaza prayer of Qureshi at Makkah Masjid here on Thursday evening. He was later buried at ancestral graveyard in Osman Shahi.
Qureshi, a towering leader of Indian Muslims, was serving as president of All India Majlis Tameer-e-Millat and assistant secretary general of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), the common platform of Indian Muslims, at the time of his death. He was also spokesman of the AIMPLB, and served as editor of Shaur, the mouthpiece of Tameer-e-Millat. As an eminent lawyer, Qureshi appeared for AIMPLB and riot victims in several cases. Earlier, he served as assistant secretary general of All India Milli Council and many other bodies representing Indian Muslims. He was in the forefront of struggles to protect the Islamic Shariah laws and the historic Babri Masjid, which was later destroyed by Hindu extremists.
Maulana Rabe Hassani Nadvi, president of AIMPLB, expressed deep condolences over the death of Maulana Qureshi, describing it as a huge loss to the Muslim community.
