Atlanta (IINA) – Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Atlanta, U.S., said it has hit a milestone never before reached by any airport in the world: serving 100 million passengers in a year.
The airport that calls itself the world's busiest announced on its social media sites said it served its 100 millionth passenger this year. That makes it the first single airport to serve that number of passengers in one calendar year, AP reported.
The 100 millionth passenger, Larry Kendrick of Gulfport, Mississippi, passed through the Atlanta airport on Sunday, Hartsfield-Jackson General Manager Miguel Southwell said.
“For the first time in history, an airport will have 100 million passengers. That’s something only Atlanta can claim,” Southwell said, adding that the airport has hired accounting firm KPMG to “help validate this milestone.”
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed welcomed a surprised Kendrick, who walked down a red carpet as journalists and onlookers recorded the moment.
The airport plans to celebrate that 100 millionth passenger with a Nissan Altima car, two Delta round trip plane tickets to anywhere around the world and a $500 gift card.
The general manager said the airport had a 5 percent increase in passenger counts this year.
