Makassar, Indonesia (IINA) - Indonesian authorities confirmed on Thursday that the death toll from the sinking of a ferryboat has risen to 63 since the weekend, Anadolu Agency reported.
Bambang Soelistyo, National Search and Rescue Agency chief, said a total of 103 people had been found since the boat encountered large waves in waters south of Sulawesi island. "Of the 103 found, 40 are alive. The rest were dead", Beritasatu TV quoted him as saying.
Around 15 others who had been on board the vessel remain missing.
The 40 bodies found on Wednesday night will be transported to Kolaka Regency to be identified by Disaster Victim Identification while the search operation continues until Saturday.
The ‘KM Marina’ had been traveling from Kolaka regency, Southeast Sulawesi province, to Wajo city to the west when it was hit by large waves last Saturday, and its crew reported to port authorities that the vessel had begun taking in water.
It is noteworthy that waterways serve as a popular form of transportation in the Indonesian archipelago, which has more than 17,000 islands.
