Atlanta, (IINA) - The CNN Travel Magazine has listed Uganda among the top 16 tourism destinations for 2016, New Vision reported.
“Meeting eyes with a silverback mountain gorilla across a misty jungle, after an arduous hike through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, leaves everlasting impressions of arguably the best wildlife safari in the world”, the CNN stated.
The CNN also describes Uganda as rich in nature. “It is an outdoor sanctuary of crater lakes, white-sand beaches on lake islands, thundering waterfalls and national parks”.
Others are Ngamba Island Chimp Sanctuary, where rescued and orphaned chimpanzees live out their days on an island in Lake Victoria. The visitors can cross the equator by boat there, slicing through Africa's largest lake, according to the CNN Travel Magazine.
In addition, the Pope's landmark visit is spurring plans towards Uganda 2040, when it aims to become a middle-income nation. Infrastructure improvements are part of the scheme.
"While the crowds are in the Serengeti or Masaai Mara, you'll find a lush country with fewer tourists in Uganda", said James Thornton, the director and general manager of Intrepid Travel. "Mountain gorillas are the main attraction, but the countryside offers many activities".
Recently, Kamego Crater Lake in Kasese district was ranked the second most beautiful crater lake in the World, by an online publication known as 'Earth prom’.
Kamengo, which is one of the crater lakes in Elizabeth National Park, in western Uganda, is popular with wildlife species including threatened bird species like flamingoes, which are not found anywhere else in Uganda.
According to Stephen Asiimwe, the Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), Uganda has always been a beautiful country but it is necessary to promote it as a tourism destination. The ranking of Uganda among the top 16 tourism destinations is an indication that Uganda is being re-discovered.
“It shows that Uganda is the best destination in the world”, Asiimwe told New Vision in an interview, adding that Uganda is the best destination for adventure tourism.
He added: “It shows what Government has done to promote Uganda as a tourism destination and its efforts to promote peace in the country and the region”.
The tourism sector contribution to Uganda's GDP, in the financial year 2014/15 it increased to around $1.8 million up from $1.66 million in the previous year.
The growth in the tourism sector translates into 9.9 percent contribution to a GDP of $28.7 billion, up from 7.9 percent in 2013/14.
