Cairo, (IINA) - The United Arab Emirates has won membership on Tuesday in the Arab Commission on Human Rights (ACHR). The election was held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League, in the presence of representatives of member states. WAM reported.
Deputy Director of Human Rights Department at UAE's Foreign Ministry Amina Muhairi is the first woman to win membership in the ACHR since its inception. Kuwaiti and Qatari candidates also won membership of the commission.
The elections were held for three vacant seats on the committee and nominees from seven countries, the United Arab Emirates, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Sudan, Iraq, Qatar, Lebanon and Kuwait, contested the vote.
It is noteworthy that the ACHR is the first Arab commission formed in order to follow up on human rights and fundamental freedom issues in the region. It considers reports from member states, and pressurizes the implementation of the measures suggested by member states towards the realization of the rights and freedoms stated in the provisions of the Arab Charter on Human Rights.
