Tobruk (IINA) – Spokesman for Libya's internationally-recognized parliament Faraj Abuhashim said Monday that the body, whose term was set to expire on October 20, "decided to extend its own mandate until power is transferred to a newly elected legislature, under the country's final constitution".
"The parliament's mandate will be extended until a new legislature is elected, based on the final constitution of the country," Abuhashim told AFP.
"This extension is a precautionary measure that puts the parliament away from any pressure during the ongoing UN-sponsored negotiations between the representatives of the Libyan conflicting parties in the Moroccan resort of Skhirat," he added.
The spokesman said the vote to amend the constitutional declaration was held in two sessions. Some 113 members attended the first session, during which several issues were discussed, including the political roadmap, the formation of a national unity government and the Skhirat dialogue. He noted that by the end of the first session, 110 members voted in favor of the amendment. Then during the second session, 129 members of the 131 present voted to extend the parliament’s mandate until power is transferred to another elected body.
