Rabat (IINA) – The 6th Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers (ICEM) is set to kick off Thursday in Rabat, Morocco.
The two-day conference is being jointly organized by the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), under the patronage of the Kingdom of Morocco.
The conference, which is being held under the theme “Climate Change: Future Challenges for Sustainable Development”, highlights the significance of the event that follows the recent adoption in New York of the UN post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals.
Besides renewing their commitment to Sustainable Development Goals, the OIC Ministers of Environment will also seek to articulate a common vision in relation to the upcoming Conference of Parties (COP21) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Sustainable development is a priority issue on the OIC agenda given the peculiar challenges facing OIC countries on account of population growth, depletion of resources, environmental degradation and climate change. While, historically, the share of OIC countries in greenhouse gas emissions and global warming has been negligible, these countries are now among the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
