Jammu, India (IINA) - Farooq Abdullah, president of the National Conference of India's Jammu and Kashmir state, on Tuesday said the state is at a crossroad of history because of communal frenzy, Hindustan Times reported.
“Great religion of Islam vehemently disapproves hurting the religious sentiments of others,” Abdullah said in his address to the party functionaries at the party headquarters in Jammu.
The NC president and former chief minister said his party will not hesitate in offering any sacrifice to preserve the amity and tranquility in the state. He appreciated the people of Jammu and Kashmir for showing the way by opening their arms to the people in distress from time to time and recalled how the people gave shelter to those who left the Valley in early 90s and discouraged communal elements who wanted to vitiate the atmosphere in 1989.
For his part, Independent MLA Engineer Abdul Rashid had hoisted a beef party in Srinagar. It was probably for the first time in the history of Kashmir that such a party was ever hoisted there. Rashid was manhandled and beaten by BJP legislators the next day in the state assembly, which was condemned by all. The deputy chief minister had said the assault on Rashid was unfortunate.
Abdullah blamed the present dispensation for promoting wedge between various regions and religions, saying it had “terribly lost credibility due to failure on all accounts”. He said hate mongers had no space in a civilized society.
Abdullah also condemned the ink-attack on Sudheendhra Kulkarni in Mumbai and said such attempts were against the spirit of freedom of speech for which India is known world over.
Abdullah also visited the heritage Raghunath Bazar in the winter capital and greeted people and the Vaishno Devi shrine-bound pilgrims.
The pilgrims jostled with each other to have a close glimpse of Farooq and had photo sessions with him.
In his interaction with different groups of pilgrims, mostly youngsters, Farooq urged them to spread the message of peace and tranquility and pray for unity of the nation.
Farooq was accompanied by NC’s Jammu Provincial President Devender Singh Rana.
