Ankara (IINA) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed in a phone call with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday the ongoing refugee crisis and the recent Israeli breach of Al-Aqsa Mosque, a presidency spokesman confirmed.
During the conversation, Erdogan said that the international community, in particular Europe, should take steps to share the burden of supporting Syrian refugees. He reiterated that Turkey by itself was sheltering over two million Syrian and Iraqi people, Anadolu Agency reported.
Europe is facing what has been described as the worst refugee crisis in the continent since World War II.
According to the UN, there are 1.9 million Syrian refugees registered in Turkey alone as of August 25. Since April 2011, Turkey has spent $6 billion supporting Syrian refugees, according to the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
Merkel thanked Erdogan for Turkey's sensitivity and said that Germany had decided to take in about 800,000 refugees until the end of the year.
Also, Erdogan expressed his concerns over this week’s incidents at Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem and said the international community should take action.
