Beirut (IINA) – Russia is building runway at an airport in Syria’s western province of Latakia and has brought hundreds of its military advisers, experts and technicians to the war-torn country, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said in a report on Sunday.
The UK-based rights group said that the Russian forces are currently working on the establishment of a long runway in Hmaymim Airport area that is able to accommodate large planes, adding that the Russians have prevented both the Syrian civil and military authorities to enter the runway area.
Meanwhile, Hmaymim Airport witnessed in the last weeks the arrival of warplanes loaded with military equipment as well as hundreds of Russian military advisers, experts and technicians, the SOHR's report revealed.
According to AFP, Observatory Director Rami Abdel Rahman said: "The Russian authorities are working on expanding an agricultural airport in the al-Hamidiya region located in the western province of Tartous. The airport is usually used by planes that spray crops with pesticides.”
