Mina (IINA) - Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims on Friday started stoning at each of the three Jamarat (pillars symbolizing Satan) in Mina, in the second day of the stoning ritual. There has been an unprecedented and massive presence of security forces and Civil Defense personnel at the huge Jamarat complex and the roads toward it in order to ensure hassle-free and smooth performance of the stoning ritual in the wake of the deadly stampede on Thursday that killed 717 pilgrims and injured 863. This was with the direct supervision Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Naif, deputy premier, minister of interior and chairman of the Supreme Hajj Committee, and close follow up of Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, governor of Makkah, advisor of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, and chairman of the Central Hajj Committee, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Friday.
The pilgrims today stoned seven pebbles first at Jamarat Al-Sughra, then at Jamarat Al-Wusta, and finally at Jamarat Al-Aqba. The ritual, in actual, is renunciation of evil in all its forms and a promise never to fall prey to the machinations and intrigues of Satan, the cursed. Most of the pilgrims will leave Mina after performing stoning at the three pillars on Saturday while the remaining pilgrims will complete the stoning ritual on Sunday, the last day of the six-day Hajj.
Stoning at Jamarat is the main ritual pilgrims have to perform in the last three days of Hajj. Pilgrims started the ritual this afternoon in a very smooth and peaceful way. The stoning ritual is an emulation of Prophet Ibrahim’s stoning of Satan at three spots where he is said to have appeared trying to dissuade him from obeying Allah’s order to sacrifice his son, Ismail.
Meanwhile, Ministry of Interior Spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki said security authorities have seriously considered the issue of overcrowding which happens due to the high density of pilgrims on roads leading from Mina to Jamarat, adding that the street where the incident occurred was an internal street in Mina, and not the one leading to Muzdalifa. He stressed that the Kingdom will not hesitate to address the reasons for the stampede whatever the cost may be, adding that the country is keen to provide all possible means to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims to help them perform their rituals safely and easily.
