Mexico City, (IINA) - Mexico’s Foreign Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu travelled to Cairo on Tuesday with relatives of the tourists who were mistakenly killed by Egyptian security forces, after demanding an urgent investigation into what she branded as an “unjustified attack”, The Guardian reported.
Before leaving for Egypt, Massieu said she would seek answers regarding the attack that killed 12 people, at least 2 of which were Mexicans. Massieu also noted that six other Mexicans are still missing.
Egypt said that the tourists entered a restricted area in the vast Western Desert and were mistakenly killed while security forces chased jihadists who had abducted and beheaded an Egyptian officer that worked for the army.
Massieu said that six Mexican survivors told their ambassador they had “suffered an aerial attack with bombs launched by a plane and helicopters” after stopping for a roadside lunch.
A Mexican man and woman were confirmed dead, the ambassador said. Ten other people were wounded, six of which are Mexicans.
Finally, Egypt had pledged to create an investigative committee headed by the prime minister, Ruiz Massieu said.
