Beirut, (IINA) - Lebanon's Cabinet on Wednesday approved a plan to end the trash crisis that sparked unprecedented protests targeting the country's stagnant political class, AFP reported.
The $11.64 million plan, which was proposed by the Agriculture Minister, was approved during a five-hour emergency cabinet meeting. The plan incorporates a key demand of activists which is the decentralization of waste management, with municipalities receiving funds to manage the issue locally.
The minister also said that other sites including an old landfill outside Beirut and a waste treatment plant in southern Sidon would be used under the plan.
It is noteworthy that protesters demanded that the ministers of interior and environment should tender their resignations for mismanaging the crisis as well as for using unnecessary force against them.
