Belfast, UK (IINA) - Amid increasing anti-refugee rhetoric, the Irish Muslim Council announced its willingness to help the government screen refugees so as to ensure that no extremists are admitted into Ireland, news agencies reported.
Offering to work hand in hand with the government, the Irish Muslim Peace and Integration Council (IMPIC) confirmed that extremists were trying to travel to Syria and not vice versa, News Talk reported on Saturday.
Sheikh Umar Al-Qadri, the founder and CEO of the IMPIC, said they will help to ensure that extremists don't sneak into the country posing as refugees.
The initiative comes amid increasing anti-refugee rhetoric, the latest of which is made by Taoiseach Enda Kenny, the head of the Fine Gael Party, who alleged that extremists want to blow up historical sites here, such as Newgrange and the Rock of Cashel.
Some 350,000 migrants have made the perilous journey to reach Europe's shores since January this year, according to figures released by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Tuesday.
The IOM said more than 2,600 migrants had drowned while trying to cross the Mediterranean in the same period.
Tens of thousands of people marched in support of refugees across the UK on Saturday, to mark International Day of Action, urging the government to do more to help refugees.
Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald clarified that those arriving would not be subjected to direct provision scheme, and that she expects 90 percent to be cleared to work quickly.
