Jakarta, (IINA) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo is planning to prevent Indonesians from working abroad as housemaids and house drivers in order to preserve the country's dignity, news agencies reported.
The Straits times reported as Widodo saying: “There are only three countries in the world supplying domestic workers, two in Asia and one in Africa. One of those in Asia is Indonesia. This is a matter of dignity. It is really shameful”.
Widodo, who visited Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines last week, said that he felt ashamed and upset when discussing the issue with Malaysian officials.
According to the Jakarta Globe, Nusron Wahid, chief of the National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, said that his agency would support the plan.
Upgrading the education system would be key for Indonesians to gain access to higher-skilled jobs and better protection abroad, Wahid added.
Al-Hayat newspaper reported on the story, saying that Indonesia intends to recall 700,000 workers from Saudi Arabia within the next 15 months.
Meanwhile, Indonesia intends to stop sending more housemaids to 21 countries, the list includes Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
It is noteworthy that according to statistics released in 2013, Indonesian workers across the world transferred around $7.3 billion to their families, according to Saudi Gazette.
