New York, (IINA) - The member states of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on Wednesday called for developing a media culture that embraces the values of tolerance, fights against extremism and teaches how to coexist rather than restricting minds and provoking fear, QNA reported.
The GCC member states stressed that cultivating a culture of peace requires the media to play a key role in popularizing such culture. This came in the speech of Qatari Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Alia Al-Thani on behalf of the GCC States.
In the speec titled “Culture of Peace,” Al-Thani said that the world has witnessed in recent decades many conflicts which exhausted the sources of nations and hindered human development, and that after these bitter experiences the international community today has realized that there is still a need to create an appropriate atmosphere in order to spread the culture of dialogue and human rights, and also to defy the use of force to achieve prosperity.
Alia said: In spite of the difficult conditions experienced by our people, they are more receptive to foundations of peaceful co-existence and renouncing wars, receptive to embracing the culture of peace, a culture which is taught by all the divine religions that call for peace, tolerance and building civilizations in their real essence. "Based on the heritage of Islamic civilization and values, GCC member states are continuing their efforts as a partner in the international community in order to promote the culture of peaceful co-existence," she added.
