Cairo (IINA) – The Arab League said Saturday that Secretary General Nabil Elaraby along with Arab foreign ministers will join Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in raising Palestine flag at the UN Headquarters in New York, Bahrain News Agency (BNA) reported.
Arab League Assistant Secretary General for Palestine and Occupied Arab Territories Mohammed Sabeeh, in a press statement, described the raising of Palestinian flag as "a symbolic and significant move."
"The raising of the Palestinian flag elicited an overwhelming approval within the UN General Assembly," he said. "The fact that 45 nations abstained from voting, mostly EU countries, is not a negative sign. The fact that eight nations, including the United States, voted against the motion is a negative indication," Sabeeh added.
Sabeeh downplayed the US justifications for voting against the move, saying that "the United States actually has a history of opposing UN decisions that support the Palestinian cause."
"The Palestinians will persevere until their aspirations for statehood are realized," he asserted.
The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution on Thursday, allowing the Palestinians to raise their flag at UN headquarters in New York City, a symbolic move that gives hope to Palestinians seeking to attain full UN membership.
