Cairo (IINA) – Egyptian security forces have mistakenly killed 12 people, including Mexican tourists, while chasing terrorists in the country's vast western desert, drawing condemnation and calls for an investigation from Mexico, news agencies reported.
A joint police and military operation Sunday "chasing terrorist elements" had "mistakenly" targeted four pick-up trucks carrying Mexican tourists, the interior ministry said in a statement.
"The incident led to the death of 12 Mexicans and Egyptians and wounding of 10 others," the ministry said without giving a breakdown of the casualties, but it added that the "the area they were in was off-limits to foreign tourists."
"An inspection team was formed to identify what happened and why the tourists were present in the restricted area," the statement said.
The statement said the wounded had been taken to hospital and an investigation had been launched into the circumstances of the incident.
Later the Mexican foreign ministry confirmed that at least two Mexican tourists were killed. Mexico's president has asked Egypt to conduct an "exhaustive" investigation in to the incident.
