Indiana, USA (IINA) - American Young Muslim students in Evansville city in the Midwestern state of Indiana have organized recently the first food event in the church, bringing the followers of the two faiths closer, according to media reports.
“This is also to help kids our age see us as friends. I don’t want them to see us as Muslims but to see us as the people we are,” said Zuha Adeel, a 17-year-old recent graduate of Signature School.
Adeel, along with two dozen of her Muslim friends, organized the Evansville Islamic Center’s first Grill and Chill.
The event, held in the Warrick County church, brought followers of the two faith groups closer. “This will help us as Muslim kids show people we can be Muslim and American at the same time bring the two worlds together for ourselves and for others,” she said.
Hadeel Yusef, 17-year-old friend of Adeel, said many of their classmates don’t know much about their faith or practices.
“Signature School has more diversity, but there were still a lot of questions,” Yusef said.
It is noteworthy that the event won praise of local Muslim leaders as offering a chance to church members to know their Muslim friends and community.
“This helps them to feel very comfortable with their identity that they don’t necessarily always share or talk about or expose with their peers,” Imam Omar Atia said.
Atia, the leader of the Islamic Society of Evansville, is the co-founder of Reclamation Studios, which produced a number of videos to counter ISIL's online recruiting propaganda.
