Abuja, (IINA) - Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the Muslim community to condemn attacks by extremist group Boko Haram, according to media reports. The president's call was welcomed by leaders of the Muslim organizations in the country.
“Once you are a Muslim you are entirely controlled by the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet, and there is no terrorism in Islam and you should live in peace and harmony with your fellow Muslims and even the non-Muslim alike,” Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau, national chairman of the prominent Muslim Group JIBWIS, told Voice of America on Saturday.
“So with preaching … we are trying our possible best to see that our teaching is in line with the doctrine of the Qur’an and that of the Sunnah of the Prophet and we cannot go beyond that.”
Buhari's call Saturday came after a surge of deadly suicide bombings in Nigeria's Borno state since the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.
Earlier this year, Boko Haram militants killed around 2,000 people and burned down homes in the northeast Nigerian town of Baga, according to Amnesty International.
