Beirut, (IINA) - Lebanese Foreign Affairs Minister Gebran Bassil said that Lebanon is in dire need of greater political assistance, particularly in light of the crises currently facing the country, The Lebanese Daily Star reported.
“Lebanon calls for a neighborhood policy that expresses a real partnership based on the importance of our area, and that takes into account the sensitive circumstances it’s passing through,” the minister said in his speech at the Review of the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP) conference.
Bassil added that Lebanon calls for the political side to be given the importance it deserves.
The ENP was developed in 2004. Its framework is periodically reviewed and proposed to 16 of the EU’s geographic neighbors, and forms the basis for further bilateral policies and coordination between the EU and partner nations.
Wednesday’s session, held at Beirut’s Mövenpick Hotel, was only comprised of the ENP’s southern Mediterranean constituents and is part of a gradual process for the formation of a new policy.
The conference was attended by Johannes Hahn, commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Arab League Chief Nabil Elaraby and the foreign ministers of Palestine, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt and Morocco. Jordan’s ambassador to Lebanon was also in attendance, along with a number of other European and Arab officials.
“Lebanon wants the ENP to be given a more political dimension, so it is not just technical,” a source told The Daily Star. “We are passing through a very delicate phase,” he continued, adding that such support is no longer sufficient.
