 Jeddah (IINA) - Lebanon’s government supports Saudi Arabia’s efforts to combat extremism, promote Arab unity and prevent foreign interference in the region, the country’s visiting Prime Minister Tammam Salam said on Tuesday.
“The visit is an opportunity for us to meet with Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, who has a special place in the hearts of the Lebanese people. It will be an opportunity to review relations between Saudi Arabia and Lebanon,” Salam said in a statement to the Saudi Press Agency upon his arrival in Jeddah.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Naif, deputy premier and minister of interior, and Jeddah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Majed, met Salam at King Abdul Aziz International Airport.
“Efforts to weaken Riyadh-Beirut ties will not benefit anybody,” said Salam. He thanked the Kingdom for supporting Lebanon’s democratic institutions, its security and stability, and helping to rebuild the country after its civil war and Israeli attacks. He said the Kingdom has always treated Lebanon as a younger brother, and has allowed thousands of Lebanese to work in the country.
He dismissed criticism of the Kingdom by some groups in Lebanon. “The official Lebanese position is always expressed by the government, not any other party. The Lebanese people are loyal, would remain committed to their pact of brotherhood, and never forget the favors it has received.” Salam said talks with the Saudi government would focus on aid for displaced people.
