New York (IINA) – The President of the UN General Assembly announced Monday that the first-ever United Nations Nelson Mandela Prize will be awarded to Dr Helena Ndume, of Namibia, and Jorge Fernando Sampaio, of Portugal, according to UN News Center.
“The prize recognizes the achievements of those who dedicate their lives to the service of humanity by promoting UN purposes and principles while honouring Nelson Mandela’s extraordinary life and legacy of reconciliation, political transition and social transformation,” said Sam Kutesa, president of the 69th session of the General Assembly.
The entrusted Selection Committee decided that the inaugural award would be given to two laureates.
According to the Assembly, Dr Ndume is an ophthalmologist who devoted her career to treating blindness and eye diseases in Namibia and throughout the developing world.
Sampaio led the struggle to restore democracy in Portugal, including throughout his tenure as Lisbon’s mayor from 1989 to 1995 and as the 18th President of the Republic from 1996 to 2006.
The Nelson Mandela Prize is an honorary award, established by the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in June 2014, to be presented once in every five year as a tribute to the outstanding achievements and contributions of two individuals (one male and one female).
