Jeddah (IINA) – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said it has been monitoring the situation facing thousands of Rohingya and Bangladeshi refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants stranded on boats in the Andaman Sea and Straits of Malacca.
OIC Secretary General Iyad Madani was in contact with countries in the region and the international community to express his concern over this humanitarian crisis and discussed possible ways to alleviate the suffering of those stranded at sea. He also called for renewed efforts to tackle the root causes of such human tragedies in order to prevent the escalation of the situation.
The Secretary General noted that this situation is a reminder of the dire conditions facing the Rohingya people who have been denied their basic human rights. He appealed to the government of Myanmar to open its doors for proper humanitarian assistance to reach communities in need.
