Kuala Lumpur (IINA) – Malaysian Senator Dr Ashraf Wajdi Dusuki called his government to take advantage of its presidency of ASEAN 2015 to contribute in showing the civilized face of Islam, especially the Islamic way of addressing polemics and humanitarian crisis, as well as issues concerning radicalism and extremism.

Dr Ashraf, while taking part in the debate on the motion of thanks for the royal address at the Dewan Negara sitting on Thursday, said ASEAN would be the most suitable platform for Malaysia to share its views and make recommendations on those issues.

He was quoted by Bernama news agency as saying "This is the time for us to showcase Islam to the world. ISIS is not Islam. We have to differentiate Islam with religious extremists. I think this is very important."

He also called for the same platform (as Chairman of ASEAN) to be used by the government to promote Malaysia as a moderation-oriented Muslim country, a very good concept mooted by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, Bernama reported.
