Makhachkala, Russia’s Dagestan (IINA) - A fire engulfed the town main mosque, in southern Russian republic of Dagestan, on Friday after morning prayers, news agencies reported.

Police spokeswoman Fatina Ubaidatova says no one was hurt when the fire swept through the mosque in Kizlyar, located near the border with Chechnya.

At 9:43 a.m., the blaze in Kizlyar was extinguished, no one was hurt, the fire was burning on an area of 1,600 square meters," a spokesman for the republic's branch of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry told Interfax news.

He added, forty-five people and 13 units of equipment were deployed to battle the blaze.

Fire investigators were still trying to determine the cause of Friday’s blaze, which broke out after morning prayers.

There were no indications that the fire was connected to the insurgency that spread through Russia’s predominantly Muslim North Caucasus region.

It is remarkable that a number of moderate Muslim clerics have been attacked or killed in Dagestan in recent years.
