Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby

Cairo (IINA) – Secretary General of the Arab League Nabil Elaraby has welcomed the UN Security Council resolution no. 2216 on Yemen.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Elaraby called on all Yemeni parties, especially the Houthis, to fully implement the provisions of the resolution and support the constitutional legitimacy.

He reiterated the League’s support to the efforts made by Yemen’s President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to maintain the country’s unity, sovereignty, security and stability, the statement said.

The Secretary General appealed to all Yemeni political forces to support the legitimate President Hadi in order to complete the political transition process, pursuant to the outcome of the comprehensive National Dialogue conference and its Implementation mechanism.

The UN Security Council resolution, drafted by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and put forward by Jordan, was approved in 14-0 vote, with Russia abstaining. The resolution demanded the Houthis to end violence and to return to political dialogue brokered by the United Nations. It also imposed arms embargo on the militant group and blacklisted its leader, and son of ex-President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
