Lebanese Defense Minister Samir Moqbel

Beirut, (IINA) - Lebanese Defense Minister Samir Moqbel said Wednesday that he would extend the tenure of Lebanese Army Intelligence chief Brig. Gen Edmond Fadel despite disapproval by some political leaders, Lebanese Daily Star reported.

“I have informed those concerned of my decision to extend Fadel’s term by six months in line with the legitimate powers given to me,” Moqbel told local daily As-Safir.

Moqbel noted that it was still early to talk about the extension of other military commanders, whose tenures are due to expire in six and seven months.

According to the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai, Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam agreed with Moqbel to extend Fadel’s term in a decree to be signed by the defense minister.
