Cairo (IINA) – At least 35 people were killed on Saturday when a bus, carrying workers of a private construction company, plunged into a canal in Giza near Cairo, the German Press Agency (dpa) reported, citing medical officials.

It was not immediately known how many people were inside the bus. The accident occurred after several vehicles crashed on the road, leading the bus to plunge into the canal, witnesses said.

Fatal road accidents are relatively common in Egypt and have often been blamed on poor driving and bad roads.

Nearly 13,000 people die and 60,000 are injured each year in the country's road accidents, according to official figures.
