Sana’a (IINA) – The European Union (EU) has confirmed its adherence to the legitimacy of Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who resigned last month, calling on Houthi militant group to end his house arrest.

The EU reiterated in a statement on Monday its commitment to the Gulf initiative to resolve the political crisis in Yemen.

The EU position comes in line with similar positions of the United States, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and the United Nations, all of which confirmed adherence to the legitimacy of President Hadi and rejected the Houthi takeover of power.

The Houthi fighters announced Friday the so-called “Constitutional Declaration” that dissolved the parliament and formed a presidential council to replace both the presidency and the parliament, a move has further deepened the political crisis in the country.

Yemen has been without formal leadership since January 22, when President Hadi and his entire cabinet resigned, after the Houthi militants raided the presidential palace and conducted a siege of Hadi's residence. Since then, the president and the ministers have been under house arrest.
